Resources for our Holy Spirit Sermon Series

This Sunday at Grace Life, we kick off a new series on The Holy Spirit. We’ll be looking at John 14-16 as we continue our ongoing study of the book of John.

As Jesus was preparing His disciples for His soon death, resurrection, and ascension, He told them in John 14:16-17, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”

There tends to be question marks concerning the person of the Holy Spirit. Who is He? What does He do? Is He with me? Is He like the Force? These are just a few of the questions that are often asked. In our new series we will answer those questions and seek to strengthen our understanding of the Triune God who is actively present and powerfully working in our lives today.

To help you in your study, I want to provide a few helpful and simple resources for you. Don’t miss this series!

SUPERNATURAL POWER FOR EVERYDAY LIFE: EXPERIENCING GOD’S EXTRAORDINARY SPIRIT IN YOUR ORDINARY LIFE by Jared C. Wilson

Would it change your life to know that there is a way to live your everyday life supernaturally? Most of us would say “yes,” and Jared C. Wilson’s new book reveals how. For the homemaker wondering how to get through the stress of washing dishes and making meals nobody seems to appreciate; for the cubicle jockey punching her time-card every day wondering if what she does really matters; for the teacher or leader wondering if he is making an impact; for the student afraid of the future; for every believer struggling to get through daily life, Supernatural Power for Everyday People offers the hope of meaning and purpose, and also the promise of power. We can get beyond just “getting by.” We can prevail and live a life of far more joy, contentment, and peace than we ever thought possible.

A practical book written in a devotional tone, Supernatural Power for Everyday People shows readers how to rely more fully on the power of the Holy Spirit for growth and satisfaction in their lives.

FATHER, SON, AND HOLY SPIRIT: RELATIONSHIPS, ROLES, AND RELEVANCE by Bruce A. Ware

God cares that we know who he is, and he longs for us to understand him better. Through his Word he revealed his triune nature, though many avoid in-depth study of this doctrine because it is so deep and mysterious.

But God’s revelation of himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit affects how he relates to us, how he made us, and who he is eternally. The doctrine of the Trinity is essential to our understanding of him and of our faith. The focus of this study is to examine the ways in which the three Persons of the Trinity relate to one another, how they relate to us, and what difference this makes to our lives.

To understand just how God is both One and Three is to delve into some of Scripture’s most glorious truths and to experience the joy of beholding the wonder of our triune God. This is a practical study for you and your home, church, and ministry.

JESUS, CONTINUED: WHY THE SPIRIT INSIDE OF YOU IS BETTER THAN JESUS BESIDE YOU by J.D. Greear

Jesus gave his disciples the audacious promise that the Spirit he would send to live inside them would be even better than if he himself remained beside them. Yet how many of us consider our connection to the Holy Spirit so strong that we would call his presence in us better than Jesus himself walking by our side?

J. D. Greear was the pastor of a rapidly growing church who still felt like he didn’t know how to relate to God personally. Though he knew a lot about God, he wasn’t as sure about how to walk with God. Furthermore, he felt overwhelmed by the size of the mission Jesus had left for his church. In a world of so much need, what difference could he possibly make? Learning how God dwells in us and empowers us in the Holy Spirit redefined his life and ministry. Ministry became less about working for God and more about letting God work through him. Drudgery was replaced by delight; helplessness was replaced by empowerment.

In Jesus, Continued… Greear explores–in clear and practical language–questions such as:

  • What does it mean to have a relationship with the Holy Spirit?
  • How can we tell when the Spirit is speaking to us?
  • What do you do when God feels absent?

If you are longing to know God in a vibrant way, Jesus, Continued… has good news for you: That’s exactly what God wants for you too. His Spirit stands ready to guide you, empower you, and use you.
